FFCC Fire Recovery Support and Homeless Outreach |
|
|
Hi Team I sent out an e-mail last week with a couple of fire recovery opportunities. The two project are still in need. Take a look at the opportunities and let me know if you can help this weekend. Also wanted to remind you that this Monday night is our Homeless outreach, June 6 beginning at 6:00pm. This month it will be a little different, we will be hosting a backyard BBQ in the park area behind the Salvation Army building. In May, a number of you volunteered to bring chips, hot dogs, cookies, punch, etc. Remember what you committed to bring and all are invited to join us on Monday night. I will be bringing the hamburgers and buns. Unfortunately I didn't have time to take names but if everyone comes through we will have enough. Here are the specific things different ones volunteered for. 3 BBQ Grills - Phil has 1, need 2 more Plates, napkins, forks, spoons and cups Hamburgers and buns - Phil Hotdogs and buns Condiments Potato Salad Chips Cookies Punch Lots of bottled water Anything that you would like to bring!!! If you weren't there to volunteer in May, choose something and bring it. It won't go unused. E-mail me back with what you are bringing so I can be sure everything is covered. This will be another awesome night, don't miss out.
Fire Recovery Support Needed.
Project #1 6-8 volunteers from 8:30am to noon A family in Escondido sustained damage to their home from the fire and needs our help with a list of repairs. Things like installing light fixtures, welding of broken wrought iron fencing, repair screening on screen doors, epoxy cracks in cement due to intense heat (not structural), landscaping, etc. Judy will be heading up the work day and will give you the tools needed to help this family out. Please call her at 760-936-7702. Please e-mail me back so I know how many are signing up.
Project #2 10-15 volunteers from 12:00pm to 4:00pm Camp Hope is a summer camp program for children of domestic violence. This is FFCC's 6th year partnering with The Family Justice Center in providing this much needed camp for these children throughout San Diego County. The Oct fire destroyed the camp located at Lake Sutherland, east of Ramona. As tough as the fire was, our community has responded in overwhelming ways and has provided everything we need to get the camp back up and running for this summer. On May 31st there will be a number of supplies, tents, camp equipment, etc., delivered to Lake Sutherland that afternoon. We need volunteers to help unpack and store. If you can assist, please e-mail me back so I can get you plugged in. If you would like to volunteer this summer at Camp Hope let me know, we would love to have your help.
Look forward to seeing you this weekend.
Thanks,
Phil Harris |

Hi Team, It was a perfect day for packaging meals. This last Sunday was our 12th food packing event. We had over 600 volunteers who contributed in the following ways Donated monies to purchase more food for our 13th food packing event Donated shoes to be shipped to Tanzania Donated a raffle prize (Creative Memories) towards the purchase of more bulk food items Donated time to help with the staging, set up and take down of the event Donated time to help assemble, weigh, seal, box and palletize the meals for shipment Donated shade canopies Donated tables Donated snacks to eat while assembling meals And most importantly we had the opportunity to make new friends, laugh together while providing a needful food resource for families here in our community and providing food for homeless children in Tanzania that is truly the difference between life and death. Thank you FFCC family for another incredible and successful event. I'm attaching some pictures for you to enjoy
FYI, FFCC is looking to host our largest food packaging event yet. We are looking to package 300,000 meals over Labor Day weekend, Sunday August 31 and Monday Sept 1st. We are looking at hosting the event locally but at a place that we can tent or trailer camp and at a location that the kids would totally enjoy. Close enough that all could participate even if it's just for an hour of packaging. The site we are looking at is in Vista off the 78. Given the info, do you think this is something you and your family would be in town for and would partner with us? I need to get a feel for how many would be game for this before I go to much further. Let me know and I'll let you know more details soon.
Thanks,
Phil Harris |

San Diego's Fight Against Hunger |
|

San Diego’s Friends & Family Community Connection (FFCC) non-profit organization is teaming up with Outreach International to assemble food packages for families in need in San Diego and Tanzania, Africa. Friends & Family Community held its first San Diego food packaging event on January 14, 2007. Over 150 community volunteers attended and 38,000 meals were assembled. The 2nd food packaging event was held on March 11, 2007. Over 300 community volunteers helped assemble and pack 48,500 meals. Our first shipping container was shipped to Tanga Africa with 300,000 meals and 100’s of donated tennis shoes. Volunteers from 8 yrs old to 80 yrs old are needed and invited to help package these nutritionally powerful food packs. The packs are made from 4 readily available dry ingredients that are easy to package, keep for long periods, and requires only boiling with water to prepare. Despite the simplicity of the food’s content, it is nutritionally complex and well balanced with 52% protein, dehydrated vegetables and 21 different vitamins and minerals. 40,000 children die each day from hunger related diseases; millions more will be undernourished, blinded and otherwise disabled by malnutrition and infection. Half the infants born in developing countries will not survive past their fifth birthday. By teaming up with FFCC, together San Diego can help eliminate hunger across the world and in our own city. In addition to volunteers FFCC is happy to accept cash donations to cover the cost of food, packaging & shipping. All donations are tax deductible. Please call Phil Harris or Jerry White to arrange for an interview or demonstration. A $20.00 donation will feed a child in Tanzania for 5 months Our next packaging event will be Sunday, October 7, 2007 from 11am to 4pm @ Dream Dinners in Poway, 12218 Poway Rd., Poway 92064 Here’s How you Can Help… • Volunteer to help package the food at one of the upcoming packaging events • Provide financial donations to purchase rice, soy, vitamins, etc., and cover shipping costs. • Join the Community Awareness team to make our city aware of the hunger needs in San Diego as well as around the world • Help distribute food packs to needy families across San Diego County • Plan for you and your family to travel to Tanzania and help distribute food packs in Singida Town, Tanzania If you would like more information, e-mail me at

#12 Food Packing Event |
|
|
|
Hi Team I hope you all had a great 4th of July celebration!!! Having just landed back here in our great country last week, what a privilege, honor and blessing to have been born in America. I am so grateful for all the freedoms and sacrifices made by so many to afford us such a wonderful country to live in. It's an honor as well to work with people, like yourself, who enjoy the blessings of America but are also purposed to pass those blessings on to others. The fact that we are preparing for our 12 food packaging event is evident of your investment to keep this country great!! Our recent trip to Africa brought great visibility to the incredible need for food. It was such a blessing to see the impact of the 900,000 meals that have already been shipped along with school supplies, medical supplies, water irrigation supplies, shoes and other valuable resources. In such a short amount of time you can see the impact San Diego has made in Tanzania. I was given a letter by the District Commissioner in the Singida Region. Her name is Florence Horombe. She wrote a letter thanking FFCC for all the work and effort over the last year and a half. She concluded her letter with the following paragraph. "Regarding many problems facing school children which include lack of playing ground and inadequate school materials, we ( Singida & FFCC) have jointly identified various areas of cooperation and intervention. This include the construction project of children playing centre to serve the newly opened Children & Community Centre and the construction of another children & community centre for Singida Rural. The Singida District Commissioner Office on behalf of Singida Municipal Council residents request the County of San Diego to join us in the partnership with FFCC. Your support will be highly appreciated and promise to use the support for the intended purpose." The door is wide open and the invitation extended to our entire County to partner together to provide assistance and support to a country and people in need. Let me know how you want to partner with us.
Join us this Sunday as we purpose to assemble 1,000's of meals to help the hungry in San Diego and in Tanzania Africa. I'm attaching our flyer and packing info for you to invite others to come with you. Here's how you can help. I understand some of the pictures I sent last e-mail didn't make it. I'll try again. These are wonderful pictures of the children receiving our meals sent by you.

Shipping Container #3 is on it's way to Tanzania |

Congratulations Team,
We packed and shipped our 3rd container of 300,000 meals, 100's of shoes and school supplies to Tanzania Africa. Thank you to all the volunteers who come out on Thursday morning and helped put it all in the container. Nothing goes as planned but we overcame all the obstacles and got the truck and container on the road and on schedule. This makes a total of 900,000 meals that have been shipped from San Diego to Tanzania, Africa. I want to stop and take a big breath and reflect on all that has happened over these last few months. I think back to our 1st event that was held in Jan of 07 when 150 volunteers came and helped package 32,000 meals and a couple hundred shoes. It was an incredible accomplishment, could not imagine doing more than what was accomplished on that Sunday. Fast forward to April of 08 when we hosted our 11th food packaging event in record heat with over 1,000 volunteers who helped package 122,000 meals and 100's of tennis shoes along with raising over $5,000 for goats, school desks and chairs, school supplies and text books. In January of 07 FFCC had no plans to travel to Tanzania. Since June of 07, 11 San Diegan's have traveled to Tanzania. In June of 08, 23 more volunteers are on their way for a combined total of 34 FFCC volunteers who have left their footprint in this country. WOW!!! Since June of 07, these are some the accomplishments in Tanzania: 6 water treatment systems have been installed and has virtually eliminated typhoid in 6 different villages Children's Distribution Center is near completion. This center will feed 500 homeless children 3x's a day. The grand opening will be in June when we visit again. SD Meals are provided in 3 different orphanages in Moshi SD Meals are provided in Singida Town and in Nkungi village Girls dormitory is under construction and will be worked on by the SD team in June. Still raising money for construction materials, beds and bedding Drought resistant seed was purchased planted in Jan of 08 for a tribe surviving on eating monkey dung. In June of 08, FFCC will be working with the Hadzabi tribe to harvest the seed. 1/3 will be eaten, 2/3 will be replanted for the harvest in Dec 10 goats will be purchased in June and given to the local school in Nkungi 40 school desks and chairs will be built in June and given to the local school in Nkungi 316 text books will be bought in June and given to the local school in Nkungi
In addition to all the work going on in Tanzania, FFCC has also given away 1,000's of non-perishable meals to local families in need throughout SD County and in Mexico.
These are just some of the highlights since our adventure began in January of last year. I had no idea that so much was in store for us. Thank for joining me on this incredible adventure and partnering with us to make a difference locally and globally.
If you would like to invest in the work that is ongoing in Tanzania, please e-mail me back so I can get you plugged in. Our 3rd trip to Tanzania will be this June from the 15-30. Our 4th trip to Tanzania will be in January of 09. If you would like to join the January or June team of 2009, please let me know as we begin to put those plans together.
Sign up early for our 12th food packaging event coming up in July on Sunday the 13th. I've attached a flyer and packing instructions for you and to share with others. Have a great weekend. What a blessing to partner with you.
